Learning how to protect your skin in summer, in fact, year-round, is the journey to a clear and flawless skin. Reduce the risk of sun damage by taking care of your skin and understanding the risks of exposure to harmful rays.

Take a look at your face, your arms or any exposed part of your body. The skin is usually darker than the unexposed parts of the body. The reason for this is the unexposed parts are constantly exposed to light as well as pollution. The skin also becomes tougher against the harsh environment and therefore thickens as a protective mechanism.

Protecting your skin, especially in summer, is very important to reduce the risks of skin cancer. We all dream of and want a clear and flawless skin! Here we look at some do’s and don’ts to protect your skin, not only in summer, but throughout the year.

  1. Always use sunscreen: The higher the sun protection factor (SPF) the more effective the sunscreen is in blocking ultraviolet (UV) rays. Opt for chemical free sunscreens when possible.
  2. Eat healthy: Lots of brightly coloured fruit and vegetables that are a good source of b-carotenes which boost your skin’s health.
  3. Stop scrubbing your face: Rather gently massage your skin and use an oil e.g., coconut oil, argan oil or jojoba oil to clean your face. Rinse and repeat.
  4. Pat dry: Rubbing your skin dry is harsh! Rather pat dry and use a separate towel for your face. Remember your face is more sensitive and susceptible to infection. Even air drying your face is a good option.
  5. Exfoliate: It is important for your skin to renew itself and remove dead outer layers of the skin. Choose a mild chemical exfoliation that is glycolic acid based.
  6. Stop physical exfoliants: These include sugar based, salt based and even the wonderfully smelling apricot exfoliants. Physical exfoliants cause micro tears that allow bacteria to creep in and this will lead to breakouts and acne.
  7. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise: You will notice that as soon as you moisturise your skin plumps up and looks healthy.
  8. Choose make up wisely: Ensure that your make up has some kind of SPF to protect your skin against the harsh effects of the sun.
  9. Avoid sun exposure at all costs: wear a hat, stay in the shade, or under an umbrella and of course wear sun protection factor.
  10. Include skin brightening ingredients: These should be included in your skin care routine! In the evening you should use a good vitamin c based cream which is a good skin lightening agent.
